How to Tie a Climbing Knot

When it comes to rock climbing, it is crucial to learn how to effectively tie knots in your ropes when dangling over dangerous heights. If this is not done correctly, it can mean disaster for those on the rope.
First: The purpose of a climbing knot
These knots are basically your lifeline in rock climbing. They secure the rope; without them, the rope or ropes can not stay connected to rocky cliffs and other natural formations that are used for climbing. This can cause you slip, and possibly fall and hurt yourself or other climbers. It could even result in death. That is why it is so important that you know how to knot your ropes properly.
Second: The most important types of climbing knots to learn
There are six primary climbing knots that you should know. These are the Figure-8 Follow-Through, the Clove Hitch, the Figure-8-on-a-Bight, the Double Figure-8 Fisherman’s Knot, the Prusik Knot and the Münter Hitch. These are the best to know because they are the easiest of the knots to tie, they are easy to view and find identify mistakes in and they are generally easy to remember. There are many types of knots that you can learn as you further your rock climbing knowledge, but these simple everyday knots are enough to give you a great start.
Third: Tighter climbing knots
You do not need a special rope for tighter knots, but you do need to ensure that your rope is in good shape, though. Make sure it is straight with no bends, dings, kinks or other knots in it. The knots you tie into it are going to affect the overall strength of the rope, so it is important that your rope is at full strength prior to this.
