How to Use a Climbing Harness

Safety is critical in rock climbing, and your harness supplies your best defense against falling. To make sure that you are as protected and confident as possible, you must secure your harness. This requires putting it on correctly and then using it to the best effect.
First: Put on your harness
To make sure your harness functions correctly, you must put it on correctly. Pull your harness up above the level of your hips. Next, tighten the waistband until it is comfortably snug. Lastly, tighten both of the leg straps; this supports your body weight as the belaying ropes suspend you. Check to make sure that the loop is in front; if not, you have put the harness on backward.
Second: Tie the correct knots
The next step requires you to integrate climbing ropes into your harness. This is called "tying into the ropes" by climbing professionals. First, use a figure-eight follow-through knot to attach your harness to the belaying system. Then, tie an additional safety knot with the end of the rope to ensure that the rope remains tied and your safety is protected. If you are uncertain how to tie these knots, ask for help from an instructor, professional or experienced rock climber. Never begin climbing until you know that you are properly tied in.
Third: Double-check your work
Safety is the primary objective in preparing your harness. The fun of rock climbing only comes later and can only come in a safe environment. Adjust the harness until it is snug but still comfortable. A harness that is too tight is certain to distract you as you climb, while a loose harness poses safety risks.
